A stew benefit is planned for Friday, March 22, to help a 48-year-old Sulphur Springs man battling colon cancer and all the expenses related to his condition.

According to the Sulphur Springs News Telegram's website, the benefit will be behind Janeen’s Country Cottage at the corner of Davis and Bonner streets, beside Sulphur Springs Fire Department’s Central Fire Station on Bonner Street. Stew, cheese, crackers and dessert will be served for $7 a bowl until the food is gone. Tables and refreshments are available at the site for those who stop by. Deliveries can be arranged for orders of five or more bowls by contacting Karen Powers at 903-348-3549.

The SS News Telegraph also says a webpage has been set up for people who wish to contribue to help the family. Go online to http://www.gofundme.com/wegotthis; Lucas’ page is listed as Jimmy Lucas’ Fight to Beat Cancer. The site was established Feb. 6 and, as of the last posting March 4, 19 people had contributed $1,900 — 20 percent of the total amount needed.
